What parents should know about apprenticeships
Dear parent or guardian
We want the best for our children, which is only natural as we have loved and nurtured them for many years. Our children think they know best as teenagers just as I remember thinking I knew it all as a teenager and causing a right stir.
What do we want for our children? To be healthy, to be happy, to be a useful member of society. We congratulate and admire academic success but the world would grind to a halt if we only had solicitors, accountants, doctors and professors. As a society we should value (in my opinion) our skilled craftsmen, the carpenter, the painter, the builder, the baker, the butcher and all the artisans who enrich our daily loves. Modern trends are beginning to appreciate the value of craftsmanship but we have a long way to go before they command the respect they do on the continent.
What I am saying is if your teenager wants to learn practical skills, earn money and gain qualifications without huge debts (!!) is this not commendable?
Many of our young butchers who started with us 15 - 20 years ago are now proud owners of their own businesses and shops, earning a very comfortable living.
